Real or Faux?

Many people have a different opinion on which products we should be buying, whether this is due to their own options or lifestyle choices. However within 21st century fashion Fur and leather are still very popular materials.

Within the new Spring/Summer 2020 collections designers such as Fendi, Ralph & Russo and Celine are all using fur as a main fabric. Commonly in the Ralph and Russo collection Mink and Ostrich are used along with a range of natural and man-made fabrics.

However designers are trying to change traditions by switching to faux products. Collections made by Stella McCartney have always been animal free using man-made alternatives. She has been praised for her commitment to sustainability and changing the face of fashion for the future. However people argue whether the new polyester alternatives are sustainable for the future.

My Question

How has 21st century fashion been impacted by faux animal products?

When choosing a question for my dissertation I needed to think about how topical the subject was and how interesting it was for me. Fashion catwalks and shows have been really influential in my work and helped me to understand the story behind the garment. In 21st century fashion designers and consumers have really changed and enhanced their views on materials and their sustainability. A huge part of this is the use of animal products such as leather and fur.

I have chosen to look into the use of faux animal products in fashion collections and how they compare to the garments of designers who still use real animal products.

There is a huge stigma around fur and leather being used in fashion due to animal rights activists believing animals should not be breed and used for fashion. Designers and consumers have a range of opinions which have become stronger during the 21st century.

Research

Throughout this project I will have to collect research using different methods. There are three main types of research, primary, secondary and tertiary.

Primary research is an original form of research. This means that any research taken from interviews, questionnaires and original pieces of art work is classed as primary.

Secondary research is taking an analysis of primary research and interpretation of the source. Research taken from a journal or a biography is classed as secondary research.

Tertiary research usually is made up of statistics and research which has been gained via facts and opinions. Examples of tertiary research are statistics, facts books and guidebooks.

Research methods are extremely important when gathering information for an essay. Having a range of methods means that you get a wide angle of a subject and more opinions and ideas to consider.
